It’s never too late to tell Santa what’s on your mind! It was 1978 at my daughter’s school and we had arranged a treat for the kids. A long line of youngsters, including my own, had aired their hopes on Santa’s lap when suddenly the impulse struck to take my turn. Why not!
I’ve often stifled these impulses over the years, letting the propriety of the moment take precedent win over a chance to lighten the mood of everyone in the room. I regret all those times I suppressed a funny comment because I didn’t want to be labeled “the smartass”. I am less inclined to stifle these days, but it’s taken a lifetime to learn this lesson — the importance of being yourself. Oh, the time I’ve wasted! But I digress.
Humor’s played a big part in my life and I‘m grateful. Simply put, it gets you through! The wannabe therapist in me would probably start every session with a laugh no matter how dire the circumstances that brought someone through the door. On second thought, perhaps I would not be a good one!
There is no doubt, moods are catching! I’m not a “shopper” and don’t spend much time in the retail world, but when I do I’m often struck by the power of a simple smile. My mood has often been transformed by that rare store employee who approaches me with a smile. They might be super happy or maybe not, but I appreciate their effort to tighten my day! Their welcoming face rubs off almost immediately and I leave feeling better than I did walking in. I’m easy.
I wish for everyone more smiles in your days as December 25 approaches. I hope Santa is good to you — even though you didn’t sit on his lap or whisper in his ear!
